RESPECT and LOVE your ELDERS as THEY have DONE the SAME for YOU.
The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) happens each year on June 15th. It was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 66/127,December 2011, following a request by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA), who first established the commemoration in June 2006. It represents the one day in the year when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted to some of our older generations.
ADDRESSING ELDER ABUSE
The purpose of WEAAD is to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect. Elder abuse is any act which causes harm to an older person and is carried out by someone they know and trust such as a family member or friend. The abuse may be physical, social, financial, psychological or sexual and can include mistreatment and neglect.
From a health and social perspectives, unless both primary health care and social service sectors are well equipped to identify and deal with the problem, elder abuse will continue to be underdiagnosed and overlooked.
This years theme is ‘Seniors deserve our respect and our attention’. This is one of the fundamentals that NCMTC prides in instilling within our students. To commemorate this day we will be in attendance showing Love & Affection to our seniors/elders at Godoma, ganze, kilifi county. This has been made possible by our partners CHPF & Kilifi County government.
Touch is a therapy, more effective than any medicines in the world. On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, let’s hold the hands of our elders, let’s show that we care about them!!
