Northcoast Medical Training College (NCMTC) today hosted a dynamic and interactive session “Mental Health Matters,” aimed at raising awareness and equipping students with tools to handle mental health challenges.
The event, held at the college, focused on some of the most pressing mental health issues among young people and communities. Key areas addressed included anxiety and stress, depression, suicide awareness and prevention, and the importance of building effective coping mechanisms.
Guest speaker Dr. John Muliro, a respected therapist and counseling psychologist, delivered the keynote presentation. He guided students through identifying triggers, recognizing warning signs, and developing resilience. Dr. Muliro also noted that while lifestyle adjustments and strong support systems are essential, in certain cases, the right type of medication—only when prescribed by a professional—can be an important part of treatment. He strongly cautioned against self-medication, urging students to always seek professional advice.
The lively and interactive nature of the session left a strong impression on participants. Students shared that they found the session extremely helpful, noting that they now feel better prepared to manage their own wellbeing and to act as “brother’s and sister’s keepers” to their peers. “Thanks to this session, I feel empowered to support others in overcoming stress, anxiety, and depression. We hope the school organizes more sessions like this,” said one nursing student.
The event reinforced the importance of collective responsibility in addressing mental health. By attending, students not only gained practical skills but also took a step forward in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health conversations.
