Health Professional Education (HPE)

Category : Uncategorized

Health Professions Education (HPE) is a course where we empower trainers of health professions with pedagogy skills and transform them from being traditional lecturers to enablers of learning at North Coast we offer it as a Post basic diploma level 6, fully accredited by TVET.  The course is 1 year.

Why this course?

You’ve probably had experiences as a learner that you considered “useless” or a waste of your time because you felt you didn’t ‘learn’. On the other hand, you’ve also probably had learning experiences that you found truly valuable and rewarding – you still remember those lessons and have used what you learned over and over in your professional (and maybe even personal) life.

Why were these experiences so different?

It’s likely that in the case of the “useful and rewarding” learning experiences, the facilitator applied strategies that made it easy (and maybe even fun) for you to learn. Unfortunately, not all trainers of health professionals know these strategies – many don’t evenknow that these strategies exist.

For a long time, there’s been a misleading assumption that as long as you’ve completed your training as a health professional, you can immediately become an effective trainer of other health professionals. This assumption disregards the fact that teaching is a profession with its own set of principles and practices that need to be adopted for one to be effective at enabling  learning.

As a teacher (trainer, educator, or facilitator), you now have the important responsibility of helping others gain knowledge, skills, and values that they will use in their professional lives. And you want to ensure that you do a good job of supporting learning so your learners find their experience with you enriching, rewarding, and valuable.

The good news is, being an effective teacher—making it easy for people to learn—is a skill you can develop. And you’ve come to the right place to do just that! The course includes 10 core units organized into 3 cycles, with 2 in-person face-to-face sessions and 2 virtual sessions.
